72. Autism Is Not Always Lifelong: 5 Lessons Every SLP Must Know

Season #2

Is autism always a lifelong condition? The research says: not necessarily. Between 9–20% of children diagnosed before age 5 eventually leave the spectrum, no longer meeting criteria for autism. Yet too often, professionals tell parents the opposite—closing a gate that isn’t theirs to close.

In this episode, I break down five evidence-based lessons from my upcoming book that can transform the way SLPs approach autism intervention:
1️⃣ Earlier is better.
2️⃣ More intensive, hands-on intervention changes outcomes.
3️⃣ Family involvement is critical.
4️⃣ Engagement matters more than repetitive behaviors.
5️⃣ Never turn off the hope light.

Autism can evolve, and our interventions play a powerful role in shaping those outcomes.
